Castles in the Sand

Cody and Newman are on Cody’s new boat doing a little Scuba diving. Suddenly, the anchor is yanked upward and they watch the bottom of Cody’s boat roar away.

Meanwhile back at Headquarters, Alex approaches Mitch with a favor. Will he escort her to her friend’s wedding this weekend. Hesitant at first, and eager to tease about her dating abilities, Mitch finally agrees. Alex explains that she and Sam have been friends since college. This intrigues Mitch — Alex’s best friend is a guy. With the date firmly set, Alex sets off for her morning run. As she makes her way up the beach, she stumbles upon a beautifully crafted sandcastle. JD, also on his morning workout, stops beside Alex. Alex is mystified, she worked this tower yesterday, it hadn’t been there when she closed up. Who would do such elaborate work at night?

By phone, Sam tells Alex that Diane will be in town a couple days before him, and she knows no one. Would she mind entertaining her until he gets into town? Of course, Alex agrees to help out her friend. Sam arranges for Diane to meet Alex the next day on the beach.

The next morning during her early workout, Alex notices another magnificent castle on the beach. She asks around HQ, but no one’s seen anyone building castles. JD calls Alex out on the deck, there’s someone looking for her. It’s Diane, Sam’s fiancée Diane talks non-stop about Sam until something catches her eye and makes her stop cold. It’s Mitch. Suddenly, she’s tongue-tied, stuttering, embarrassed. Alex looks from Mitch to Diane. She sees a potential problem arising.

The next morning, Alex approaches Mitch and confirms her suspicions. Diane is enamored with Mitch — she talked about him all through dinner. Mitch agrees as the day goes on and Diane spends most of it watching Mitch from the base of his tower. Later at headquarters, Alex tells Mitch she’s come up with a solution. She told Diane that she and Mitch were a couple, and that they would be coming over to his house for dinner tonight.

Good news for Cody! They found his boat. His spirits building, he heads down to the docks to claim it. But, it’s totaled… only the skeleton remains, the high tech equipment and valuable parts have been stripped. He learns that his isn’t the first boat this has been done to, there’s a ring operation. The police and Coast Guard haven’t been able to catch them. Cody sets off, hungry to find the vandals.

As Mitch and Alex’s night of deception with Diane advances they find themselves getting deeper and deeper into the charade. As one comical moment after another almost lets the secret slip, the doorbell rings. It’s Newmie, with the Zimmerman twins, ready for their double date. Diane looks back and forth from Alex to Mitch. What is going on?

After Alex’s disastrous night, she’s once again on early morning workout. She sees another castle in the sand, but this time sees the remnants of the builder’s tools. Getting closer, we see a small figure lying under the tower, fast asleep. He’s clad head to toe in black and has the hooded sweatshirt cinched tightly around his face. Alex calls gently to him. He wakes with a start and runs off. Alex pursues. She catches him and finds out his story. He has a disease called “Xeroderma Pigmentosum.” He can never be in the sun. But because of his love of the beach, the sand, the waves, every night he sneaks down to Malibu beach and builds castles. It’s his only time to enjoy the beauty of the beach. After talking to his mother, Alex decides to volunteer and help with these special needs children.

Outside HQ, Sam rushes out of a taxi and up to Alex. He’s frantic. Diane called him, said she was calling off the wedding. They rush off to find her – at the base of Mitch’s tower. Diane’s apologized to Mitch – the wedding was making her do and say crazy things. But she adds with a smile – I’ll never forget you Mitch Buchannon. As Mitch absorbs this, Sam and Alex arrive in a lifeguard truck. Sam jumps out, runs over to Diane, professes his love. Diane said she was only kidding, the wedding’s on. Mitch and Alex watch as Diane and Sam patch things up.

After the wedding, Mitch and Alex walk together on the beach, talking about the disease. We see a spark between them. Mitch mentions that maybe Alex wasn’t entirely acting her interest in him at his house. Alex confirms that she’s a great actress, but as they get closer and closer … Newman appears with the Zimmerman twins and Mitch leaps between the women on the back of the truck and takes off.
