Lost and Found

When a Vietnamese refugee in search of her American GI father falls off the Malibu pier and suffers temporary amnesia, Mitch and Caroline attempt to find her father and reunite them. Meanwhile, CJ and Cody help a wheelchair-bound comedian achieve his dream of swimming in the ocean.

A young Amerasian woman is walking up and down the Malibu pier with a photograph of a young man in uniform. She shows it to everyone in sight, but no one recognizes the person in the photo. Despondent, she looks out to sea and spots a fishing trawler leaving dock. The man onboard looks eerily familiar. Looking at the photo one more time, the woman realizes the man on the boat is the same person. She calls out to him, but he pretends not to hear her. In her rush down the pier to stop him, she stumbles and falls into the water, hitting her head on the way down. Mitch, patrolling nearby in the Scarab, sees the accident and resuces her.

Later that day, Mitch gets a call from the hospital. It seems the woman is suffering from temporary amnesia and the only person she remembers is Mitch. Caroline accomapnies him to the hospital, where they learn that the woman’s name is Thuy, but not much else beyond a pair of Vietnam-era dog tags and the muttered word “Ventura.” Mitch and Caroline investigate further, and they discover that the owner of the fishing trawler Buena Ventura is Thuy’s American father. Now Mitch must convince him to reunite with a daughter he would rather forget, in order to help Thuy remember again.

Meanwhile, CJ has befriended Jess, a wheelchair-bound comedian who is determined to swim in the ocean without assistance. However, there are no wheelchair access ramps to the beach, so Jess repeatedly cajoles CJ into doing something about it. CJ is sympathetic, but Jess’ constant insistence frustrates her, because she knows that installing access ramps can’t be done overnight. When CJ mentions the problem to Cody, he comes up with a brilliant solution, but because it’s a little off-the-wall, will Jess go for it?
