Big Island Heat

Two boys, MATTHEW and JOHN, are in Shark’s Cove looking for Opihi. As they are climbing, Matthew falls through an open hole and gets stuck. John, panicked, runs for help. Sean, Jenna, Dawn, Allie and Jason return to the hole with him. Jenna notes the tides are coming in and time is short. Jenna, Jason, Sean and Allie go under water to see if they can find any of the volcanic lava tubes where the boy might be stuck. Dawn remains on top. The tide is coming in fast, so Jenna and Sean worry that if they don’t find Matthew soon, it will be too late.

Jason and Jenna go off in one direction; Sean and Allie in another. Sean sees Matthew’s leg dangling. The problem is that he is lodged in the hole, and the only way to bring him out is to return to the surface and pull him out. They return to the surface. Jenna feels that she should be the one lowered into the hole because she has a better chance maneuvering in the tight space than the men. Besides, they will need all their strength to pull her back up. They agree. Allie, who has remained below, is told that Jenna is coming. She uses her light to pin point where the boy is. Jenna finds him and tries to grab onto him. He comes to and panics, thrashing about. Jenna is able to calm him down and explain what they are going to do: she is going to hang upside down and hold him as they go up. As he is pulled from the hole, a loose volcanic rock slips and pins Allie. As Jenna and Matthew rise, a few surges cause them to lose ground. At one point, Jenna almost drops him-but he is tied to her so she is able to reestablish her grip on him. Dawn dives down to try to free Allie. Sean and JD are able to pull Jenna to the top of the hole. Matthew is re-leased, and Jenna once again is lowered to help Dawn free Allie. Jenna is able to move the rock enough for Allie to break free. Dawn pulls Allie backwards through the tube to safety.

Despite the rescue, Sean and Jenna are not getting along. She apologizes for a bad dinner they had the night before, but then immediately proceeds to ask Sean for all sorts of information about the team, their equipment and their finances. Sean knows that she plans to take it all over. He confides his feelings to Dawn, who is most understanding. He feels he will have to battle Jenna sooner or later.

He can’t involve Mitch because he would then be marginalized as far as the team is concerned: he is ready to take that step to move the team from being Mitch’s dream to being his. He has seen the team come too far to give it up that easily. He decides to fight her.

Allie is off for the Big Island for a gig taking some rich tourists to the Hilton Waikoloa. Jason was to tag along. At first, Jason tries to back out, but Allie convinces him to go because they will have a chance to see Kilauea. They will be helicoptering rich wife MRS. THORNTON MARBY and her dilettante young daughters DAPHNE and ELISE to the Hilton Waikoloa where they are going to meet their father. Things do not start out well because Mrs. Thornton treats Jason like a bellboy and makes him carry her bags. Jason strains under the weight of the Louis Vuitton suitcases, but after a couple of looks from Allie, deposits them in the helicopter. At least the two of them will have fun after they drop the rich folks off. Jason realizes that the rich really are a different breed of human.

Back at headquarters, Sean gets a call that a boat is in trouble. He and Dawn start rushing for the door. Jenna wants to join them. After a moment’s hesitation, Sean agrees.

After dropping the Marbrys off, Jason and Allie decide to spend some time look-ing at Kilauea. As they circle near by, they see some tourists on the ledge taking pictures of the volcano. They know this is dangerous. Jason tries to shout to them to get back. Instead, they move forward some more. The ledge breaks and they fall into the water. Allie immediately calls the Coast Guard for back up.

Jenna and Sean are told that a research vessel has been trapped with several victims on board. En route, they are told that the boat fire is out and they are not needed. This gives Sean and Jenna a chance to have it out: she accuses him of being a “week-end warrior” type: willing to play with toys, but not really committed to the lifeguard cause. Sean, having had enough of her, tells her the real reason he became a lifeguard: he lost his son in a drowning accident. He is tired of Jenna’s snap judgments. In turn, she feels she may have misjudged Sean. She will do what she can to change the mind of the city council, who had already decided to give her control of the lifeguard training center. She then asks him why he keeps what happened to his son a secret. Sean explains to Jenna it is because he does not want people to treat him differently, and they always do when they hear his sad story. Jenna promises to keep it between them.

Two SALESMEN out on a fishing trip with BIKINIED BABES see the accident. Playing hero, they come too close to shore and ignore Jason’s attempted warning. The boat gets caught in a swell and capsizes. Allie has heard back from the Coast Guard: they are on another rescue and cannot get there right away. It is up to Allie and Jason to save the day. Jason jumps into the water and helps the people pull together. Unfortunately, one of the tourists from the rocks-who had already broken his leg–suddenly passes out. His wife screams that he has gone into a diabetic convulsion and doesn’t have his medication. One of the salesmen has hurt his back and feels numb. Jason manages to gather everyone into a circle. Then, the second salesman gets caught in a rip and dragged under. Allie tries to contact Sean. Jason rescues the 2nd salesman. One of the bikinied babes gets hysterical, but Jason is able to calm her down. Allie lands the heli-copter on the lava and helps Jason bring the group to shore. She calls the Coast Guard again. They are still tied up but will make a drop.

Because of the boy’s condition, Sean feels they should try to get out of the burning boat by any means possible.

Sean and Jenna are able to swim through and bring the man and his son to safety.

Back to Allie and Jason: the rising tide crashes on the rocks. A Coast Guard C-130 arrives. It is too big to land, but drops a payload off into the ocean. The tourists and salesmen are worried that the package will float away. Fortunately, Jason is aware of procedure. The package was dropped in the water so it would not smash on impact. He brings it to shore. At least they can take care of the immediate medical situation until the Coast Guard arrives.

The Coast Guard arrives and Allie and Jason’s day is done. They get back in the helicopter and head back for Oahu. A few miles off shore, the helicopter starts sputtering. In all the excitement, Allie forgot to check the fuel levels. They just barely make it back to the North Shore, where the helicopter, completely out of gas, winds down and lands in the water a few feet from the shore. Allie and Jason are forced to hitchhike on the back of a pig truck to return to civilization.

We are at Haleiwa. Jenna tells Sean she has told everyone to back off on their plans to turn the team over to the North Shore lifeguards. She then invites Sean out for another dinner, this time at her place.
