Gold From The Deep

Dawn, Allie, Jessie and Kekoa are stretching and loosening up for a long-distance swim. They discuss Allie’s blossoming romance with Nick. Dawn remains a little cynical, feeling that men always look like they’re going to be different, but ultimately aren’t. As they swim in the water, what appear to be humanoid creatures suddenly appear from the depths and attack them. The women use their wiles and escape, only to see that the “hu-manoids” are Jason, Brian, Newmie and Sean. Jessie playfully tosses Jason’s radio at him. Allie goes down to get it. Under the water, she finds a gold coin. It interests her and she places it in her swim suit before swimming back to the surface. It could be part of the treasure she has been seeking.

Allie pours over her research materials. She is sure the coin is part of a treasure she has been hoping to find for years. Jason comes into the room bearing shave ice from Matsu-motos and she tells him about it, making sure he promises to keep it a secret. Moments later, Sean shows up and Jason immediately tells him. Sean laughingly reminds her of their adventures on the Na Pali coast. She says that this could be the treasure she has been seeking. It is a coin minted to celebrate the centennial of Kamehameha’s declara-tion of Hawaii’s independence. Unfortunately, because of Pearl Harbor, the ceremony never happened. The coins were part of a secret shipment made from the islands in the panic-stricken days following Pearl Harbor.

The boat and its contents never made it to Sydney. She knows this is the treasure and wants to find it. While the coins aren’t worth that much for their metal, their historical value and the fact that they are uncirculated makes them worth perhaps millions. Sean agrees to let her use the scarab if they can find some way to tie a treasure hunt in with the training.

Soon, almost everyone in the team is involved with the search. Kekoa learns that the Japanese Imperial Fleet sunk a vessel on December 30, 1941. Nick checks on Coast Guard records to learn weather conditions. Nick is interested in Allie’s passion for find-ing the treasure. She tells him that her father was a fortune hunter who basically left her mother to tend for the family while he went looking for his millions. Nick now under-stands her unwillingness to commit. He is intrigued by her search. She wants him to be part of it. However, they both know there are some real concerns: they need irrefutable proof that they are the ones who discovered the wreck.

Within hours, the whole team seems to be in an uproar. Jessie is totally thrilled at the prospect of finding a massive treasure and has already started dreaming up ways to spend the money. Allie reminds them that they need tangible proof that they found the treasure: a piece of the hull, the ship’s bell-something. Jason is strangely pensive-he recog-nizes the treasure from somewhere. He wonders who the coins really belong to. While getting a drink of water, Jessie overhears Dawn on the phone, making a deal about their treasure. She immediately runs back to the room where everyone else is, announcing breathlessly that they will have to kill Dawn!

Everyone is stunned by Jessie’s vehemence, but she reminds them that Dawn is a schemer who more than once has caused trouble for Allie when she was trying to vamp Nick. Just then, Dawn comes in. The team vamps, but Allie is direct, saying they have overheard Dawn’s call. Jason confesses he told her while they were working out. Now, everyone in the room starts fighting over what to do with the treasure. Jason and Kekoa feel that because the sunken ship carried Hawaiian artifacts, it should go to the people of Hawaii. Jessie wants the money, and Allie keeps reminding them that the treasure is, technically, hers. In the midst of their fight, Sean enters the room, wondering what’s going on. No one wants to tell him. Finally, Allie breaks down and says they’re dis-cussing the treasure. Sean, seeing the team is falling apart, says they will stop discussing treasure hunts right now. There will be no search for treasure!

Sean’s words put everyone in a momentary state of shock. Then, Dawn points out that their goals aren’t necessarily incompatible and they can work together. Dawn explains that Gregory owns The Slice, a cutting-edge-of-technology boat that is the only vehicle that can help them with the recovery mission. Gregory is willing to let them use his boat for a finder’s fee. Sean watches the group’s interaction, bemused. He finally agrees to help them. Later, he talks to Dawn, trying to find out why she is so helpful. In all the time she has been there, she hasn’t really engaged with the group. He wants her to be more of a team player.

The next day, the team is on the ocean in The Slice. It is everything that Dawn has said-and more. It rides above the waves on four pontoons, almost like a James Bond contrap-tion. Nick helps Allie get into her dive gear. They are both excited about what they are doing (although no one is as excited as Jessie). Dawn and Sean watch their enthusiasm. She tweaks him a bit about his almost-relationship with Allie.

The team dives into the water for a montage of the deep dive, featuring the team using Sony cameras to record the bottom of the ocean. Sean watches video playback from the deck. Looking at the tape, Jessie remains impatient: they have found nothing yet, and she is getting frustrated. Dawn then does a computer analysis of the footage they shot. There are a number of mapping shadows which could be the location of the wreck. Unfortu-nately, many of them are off the edge of the Pacific Shelf, meaning they are over 200 feet below the surface. But, with The Slice, they should be able to find it. Jessie is once more elated: she is going to be rich!

The search for the treasure continues. Sean watches the dynamics of everyone and ob-serves the changes they are going through as the hunt for treasure progresses. Dawn points out to him that he wanted her more involved with the team. Look at her now-all she needed was a physical reason. Based on observations of computer mapping of the ocean floor, they have narrowed down their targets for the search. It’s a big site, almost fully intact, but it’s on the slope of the Pacific Shelf. They decide to dive down for it.

Sean, Allie, Jason and Nick go down, while Kekoa, Dawn and Jessie remain top side. They find the boat, but to their horror, there is a big torpedo sticking out of the side.

Nevertheless, the team decides to continue trying to bring up some proof of the vessel. But Sean warns them to not go into the boat. Jason, with his usual enthusiasm, ignores Sean’s warning and goes into the ship. All around him are ruined artifacts and the debris of fifty plus years under water. His radio starts frizzing out, but he is determined to push on. Then, through a narrow opening, he spots a chest. He tries to move the chest. It’s heavy, and in moving it, the whole boat shakes, causing the torpedo to start slipping. Sean and the team, unable to contact Jason via the radio, now begin searching for him. Jason tries to push the chest through some timbers, causing the boat to slip some more and the torpedo to wobble. Seeing that the torpedo is just about to fall loose, Sean warns the others on the team to get to the surface as fast as they can: if the torpedo explodes, they could blow out their ear drums. Jessie and Dawn are all for abandoning the search right away because of the dan-ger involved. Jason is finally able to lug the chest free, but in the process, the torpedo loses is equilibrium and starts falling fast. Sean realizes they don’t have a moment to spare. He swims into the boat. Suddenly, a rafter falls down on him, further dislodging the torpedo. Nick and Allie see Sean is trapped and, struggling to lift the beam without further dislodging the bomb, are able to set him free.

Sean spots Jason still struggling with the chest. He sees that the torpedo is about to lose its balance. He tries to talk to Jason on the radio, but Jason’s is still not working. He swims to Jason and tries to get him to drop the chest. Jason is shocked and doesn’t un-derstand why Sean is doing this. Sean pulls off his mask and kicks the chest. It falls to the bottom. Sean and Jason make it to the surface mere seconds before the torpedo ex-plodes, causing a huge shower of water. Back on the boat, the team is trying to regroup. Jason is still frustrated that something so close has been lost. Sean then reminds the team that their operating motto is still “team-work.”

Dawn approaches Nick and asks him what he and Allie planned to do with the treasure. His answer gives her satisfaction as it means there is still no commitment to their rela-tionship.

Sean stands on the bow, looking at the ocean. The whole treasure thing has been a test for his team and their ability to work together. The whole experience has proven that they are a team.
