Mitch meets Norman Jacobson, AKA JUNK YARD, one of Mitch’s cronies from the old Navy Seal days. Junk Yard and he trade old war stories for a while, then he launches right into the reason he wanted to see Mitch. It seems that Green Scorpion, an Eco-terrorist group, is planning something in Hawaii. Junk would like for Mitch to go undercover to see what he can learn. He feels Mitch will be interested in this case because one of the people behind Green Scorpion is ZACK MARTIN, who also served with them in the Seals. Zack was always a loose cannon, but Mitch refuses to believe he is that loose. Right now, Zack and his sister, BREE (short for Brianne), are at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Junk reminds Mitch that he wants him to get information, not get involved in anything. Apparently, it wasn’t only Zack who had the potential to be a loose cannon.
Mitch arrives at the Hilton, armed with some scuba gear that Brianne and Zack had repaired. He tells her he has upgraded some of her order-at no extra charge-as part of the service. He subtly lets her know that diving is a big turn on for him and that he is extremely disturbed at the destruction caused by polluters and industry. Just then, Zack arrives. He is obviously wound very tight. Zack fakes surprise and happiness at seeing Mitch again. They reminisce about the old days in Bangkok, and Zack explains why he is indebted to Mitch. He insists that Mitch join them for a dive the next day at a very unusual location. When he sees Mitch hesitate, he ups the ante by promising that Bree will wear her thong.
After Mitch leaves, Bree asks Zack if he’s crazy or something. Zack reminds her that had he not been so friendly, Mitch would have been even more suspicious. She doesn’t believe in coincidences, and doesn’t feel that Mitch was there “by accident.” Zack is worried about the future of the mission. Bree tells him not to be-she will handle everything.
As soon as Mitch gets outside of the hotel, he calls Junk on his cell phone. Junk warns him not to go diving with them, but Mitch feels he can handle himself. Besides, he only plans to go down for one dive, after which he will feign illness and come back. Junk doesn’t like it, but Mitch reminds him that there’s a lot of stuff they don’t like.
On the ocean the next day, Mitch and Zack once again regale Bree with stories of their adventures and discuss all the environmental problems they see. Mitch notices that they are near the edge of the Pacific Shelf. Bree excuses herself to get changed. As soon as she leaves, Zack tries to set something up between Mitch and Bree, but Mitch isn’t biting. He is casually looking through the window of Bree’s cabin and is shocked to see that he can observe her undressing. He quickly turns away, but not before he sees the tell tale tattoo of the Green Scorpions.
The three explore the wrecks of some WWII planes which have become a habitat for fish. All during the trip, Mitch keeps an eye on Zack, knowing he is up to something, even though he is pretending to just take photographs. Near the floor, Mitch observes a lot of derelict WWII era bombs. Fortunately, they need a detonator to go off. Bree is driven to one side of the wreck by the currents. Mitch goes to help her and the two wind up in an awkward embrace. After they separate, Mitch tries to find where Zack has gone. Suddenly, he hears Bree call out: she has a cramp. He helps her to the surface.
Once there, he puts ice on her leg. Zack returns topside and starts reloading his camera. Bree tells Mitch that what they need is a big event to capture world attention to the environmental problem. She serves him a Ginger Ale. She tells him that Green Scorpion’s master plan is to blow up the reef. Mitch will then arrest them, and they will make the talk show circuit. Mitch starts feeling woozy: the Ginger Ale has been spiked. He loses consciousness.
When Mitch comes to, he is tied up and stuffed in a compartment. He hears Bree and Zack talking. She tells him he can leave and go to Fiji while she is arrested for the bombing. Then, they dive into the water. Using all his strength, Mitch pulls himself upright and finds something to cut the ropes that tie his hands. Fighting the effects of the drugs, he breaks free, puts on his own scuba gear, and dives off the side. He gets an arm lock on Zack, who pulls a knife. The two men struggle. Zack yelps in pain: he has sliced his own arm. Mitch breaks the knife blade and then moves to Bree. He cuts her air tube. They return to the surface and climb on board the boat. Mitch lets them know that he has the detonators and the keys to the boat. Bree screams that there is no way to defuse the detonators. Mitch heads the boat to open sea. At the last second, when they have crossed over the edge of the Pacific Shelf, he throws the detonator overboard. The explosion is huge.
Bree doesn’t believe Mitch will turn them in, but, like Bogart in The Maltese Falcon, he is adamant. He tells Bree she can call him and they’ll have a Ginger Ale-when she gets out. Zack starts laughing hysterically. Mitch doesn’t find anything funny.
