The team is racing to a rescue, where a man, STEVEN, has been injured by being smashed against rocks. Every second counts as the man has been under water for nearly ten minutes. Dawn, Newmie, Brian and Sean are on the case. Diving in the water, Dawn spots Steven on the bottom. She brings him to the surface and the team gets him to shore. It seems as if the man is still breathing, but Jessie is sure it is just an involuntary chest reaction: he has been down for nearly twenty minutes by this time. Dawn mentions to Sean that she felt a little strange at seeing the strange smile on Steven’s face. Sean insists its just the water moving his relaxed muscles. Still, all lifesaving methods are used. The next day, Kai has some good/unexpected news: Steven has survived. Dawn and Sean both head to the hospital to talk to him. They want to know how he survived.
DR. INABA has an explanation for them: as the brain suffers from lack of oxygen, it shunts down the body, one part at a time in an effort to keep the brain alive. The doctor feels that Steven’s case is a very lucky fluke. They go and talk to him. Dawn uses her wiles to subtly hypnotize/seduce him. He explains the sensation of what it felt like to almost drown—the clearer colors and the heightened awareness. Dawn notices that Sean is very intrigued by Steven’s story. Jessie and Kekoa are jogging. Ever since she performed the rescue of Tiffany (Father of the Groom), she has felt more assertive in all areas of her life and has realized that she has let her natural hesitancy stop her from pursuing romance. Jessie decides to take care of that problem right away. While Allie is in the shower, she proposes they take Kekoa out for a night on a cruise ship where she can meet some man. Allie is still recovering from the loss of Nick, so doesn’t feel up to the partying. However, she is more than willing to go shopping.
Jessie, Kekoa and Allie go shopping and try on a variety of outfits at the many shops at Hilton Hawaiian Village. Everyone’s spirits are raised, so even Allie agrees to accompany Kekoa and Jessie on the Navatek. The boat is currently experiencing a big convention. Jessie puts Kekoa at ease by saying they are not trying to find husbands, just men who are willing to have a good time. They will use the lifeguarding techniques of observation, evaluation, and anticipation to accomplish their goals. Kekoa has already surprised them by showing up in an outfit far more daring than anything they had expected. They cruise some of the men and get a couple of interested looks. Allie begins to loosen up with one of the men. Kekoa is having the time of her life. Jessie has noticed that the captain is pretty attractive, too. A man comes up to ask Kekoa for a dance—via Jessie, who is more than happy to prod Kekoa into accepting. Jessie goes to the captain’s cabin. Suddenly, the boat is in turmoil: a catamaran filled with touring women has capsized and the Navatek is the closest vessel. Jessie lets the captain know she and her friends are lifeguards.
The Navatek pulls up close to the catamaran. The girls quickly doff their evening gowns and jump into the water. Jessie and Allie are surprised at Kekoa’s garter and sexy black stockings. Kekoa promises to explain…later. The crew and all female passengers are rescued. They are reunited with their respective dates.
Sean receives a message from Dawn: she wants him to meet her at 8:00 p.m. sharp. She warns him not to be late. But Sean is waylaid by Newmie, who has tons of paperwork for him to sign. When Sean arrives at the lagoon, he sees that Dawn is submerged beneath the surface, attached to a variety of monitoring devices. She is flatlining! He quickly jumps into the water and shakes her. She wakes up and tells him not to worry—she was just doing an old ritual she learned in India. Then, she asks him if he would like to experience his body shunting down. Sean is at first hesitant, but curiosity gets the better of him. Dawn helps Sean submerge himself in water and experience drowning. Sean feels his body shunt down. He sees Dawn in front of him, morphing into different images as he teeters on the brink of consciousness. Not able to take it any longer, he sits up and slowly returns to normal. This is one thing he doesn’t have to experience again.
A few days later, the team is involved in an intense rescue by the shore. A boat has washed up on the rocks. Surf crashes over it and pounds it. Inside an air pocket are three women. The boat loses its position on the rocky shore and slips into the water. The team (consisting of Sean, Dawn, and Brian) know there is not a second to spare. Dawn dives down and finds a hole just small enough for her to slip through. She goes into the boat and pulls the women inside to safety. Before she can get out, though, a huge wave crashes over the boat, capsizing it and sending it to the bottom of the ocean. Dawn is helplessly trapped inside.
Sean and Brian, armed with axes from Kai, dive down and start hammering at the bottom of the boat, knowing there is no time to spare. Finally, they are able to break through the hull of the boat. Inside, Sean sees that Dawn has a beatific expression on her face, similar to the one Steven had. He brings her to the surface and performs CPR. It doesn’t work. He tries again and again, screaming that she can’t die. She chokes, gasps, and comes to. She is back. She and Sean both agree they never want to go through that again.
