Sara, a troubled young woman, attempts suicide by setting her boat on fire. Mitch rescues her just before the boat explodes. She is very grateful . . .and is obviously attracted to him, although he is somewhat uncomfortable with her attentions. Meanwhile, Newman created a kite-flying contest for the benefit of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. His nephew Todd, stricken with the disease, has become an embittered little boy, jealous of activities other boys engage in while he has to deal with the daily regime of blood sugar tests and insulin shots. April and Manny get involved, building a rather pathetic kite of their own and try to reach out to Todd to convince him that he can lead the normal life of a 12-year-old boy – it’s all in the attitude.
Sara, after sending thank-you flowers to Mitch, is hired by his mother, Irene, to be a temporary nanny for young Ashley. Irene is delighted with Sara, who seems to be great with the baby, but Mitch is a bit skeptical, wanting to check her references. They agree to give Sara a test run. Sara gives Mitch another strange and unwelcome gift – a tape of the song “Someone to Watch Over Me”. Sara’s behavior gets more and more bizarre.
She drugs Irene so she falls asleep in order to set up a situation in which Mitch sees that Sara was conveniently around to take care of Ashley as her grandmother slumbers. That night she enters Mitch’s bedroom in a sexy nightgown and attempts to seduce him. Finally, concerned for the safety of both Ashley and his mother, Mitch fires her. She flips out, screaming and ranting, self-mutilating herself to make the argument look like an attempted rape. Two passers-by come to her ‘rescue’ and mistakenly attack Mitch, believing Sara needs rescuing from him. Sara disappears during the melee.
Sara returns to the house where Irene is taking a shower and kidnaps Ashley. Irene is terrified and Mitch, Newman, April, and Manny go off on a high-speed search. They find Ashley in her baby chair on the beach, with a series of photographs showing the infant and Sara together in mother-and-child poses, convincing them that Sara is unbalanced and a threat to everyone.
Sara returns to the house and ties up Irene in the bedroom. Mitch comes home and finds Sara in a slinky dress and her dyed blonde – she’s become a drop-dead ringer for Neely. Mitch realized he has to be careful and humors Sara for a while by pretending to believe in her psychotic fantasy. Then he tells her he checked her references and learned the true story of a husband, Mr. Scanion, who divorced his wife and remarries a nanny named Sara Conion. Sara is actually the demented ex- Mrs. Scanion who has assumed the identity of the nanny she believes destroyed her life! Sara completely flips out and attacks Mitch in a rage. An intense fight ensues, and Sara is finally subdued. Mitch frees Irene, Ashley is safe, and the cops take custody of the wounded and demented Sara.
April and Manny got last place in the kite-flying contest, losing to a bunch of kids. However, Todd finally opens up to April, appreciating her efforts to give him a more positive attitude, and promises to take a more optimistic approach to his situation. Someday, a cure may be found and he has to make every day count until then.
