When Neely finds an apartment for her and Ashley, but has to wait for renovations to be complete, Mitch invites the two of them to stay with him for a couple of days. Neely has also taken a second job waitressing to come up with the money for the security deposit and Mitch soon finds himself appointed as Ashley’s babysitter for the evening. He rediscovers his parenting skills although watching the football game while swaying to keep Ashley quiet wasn’t his original plan for the evening.
A friendly Scarab race with April and Jordan against Cody and Newmie starts getting serious when the women lose and want a rematch, and two rich local hotshots, Spenser and Cooper, taunt Cody into thinking about a big charity race scheduled for Sunday to benefit Camp Baywatch. But Newmie convinces Cody that against the other men’s state-of-the-art boat, he wouldn’t stand a chance. In the rematch against the women, they compete in a water skills competition – wave runners, windsurfing, and paddleboarding. Despite the women’s best efforts, the men squeak out a victory.
However, when Newmie and Cody run into Spenser and Cooper again while driving Mitch’s private Scarab, Cody can’t ignore their challenge and agrees to race them – and bets with Mitch’s boat as the prize. Later on, Cody and Newmie challenge the women again in a race to rescue some swimmers in trouble, but Cody gets tangled in the tether of his rescue can and injures his knee.
That night, Mitch is organizing the regular poker game, but things don’t shape up as he hoped when Manny and JD cancel out and Cody shows up with his leg in an air cast. To add to the now-destroyed evening, Neely comes home and reveals that her new landlord ripped her off by stealing her security deposit and her babysitter was in a fender bender – leaving Mitch to once again watch Ashley while she goes off to her nightly waitressing job. Mitch assures Neely that she can stay as long as she needs to and tries to salvage the evening by dealing Ashley into the poker game. While playing hands, Cody admits he bet Mitch’s boat in a race, but with his knee messed up, it doesn’t look like he’ll be able to be very competitive.
When Mitch shows up with Cody and Newmie to pull out of the grudge match with Spenser and Cooper, he gets suckered into taking on the two hotshots himself with Newmie. What they don’t know is that the other men have hot-wired their boat for extra speed. During the race, their jury-rigged electrical wiring blows, fusing the controls. Spenser and Cooper leap overboard to avoid the electrical fire but the boat keeps on racing at high speed – towards an oil platform. Mitch and Newmie manuever their Scarab alongside the damaged boat. Mitch leaps on board and stuffs rags into the intake valve, halting the boat just shy of the platform and a major disaster.
That night, Neely admits to Mitch that she wasn’t very good at waitressing, and was fired from her job. Her dejection at not being able to get the extra money to move into an apartment with Ashley turns to happiness when Mitch tells her that the two of them are moving in permanently – showing her how they’re going to paint and redecorate one of his rooms just for his new, favorite little girl, who just happens to like football and is a great poker player! And Mitch and Neely share a moment that’s an unspoken beginning for the two of them.
