Night of the Dolphin

An illicit drug deal is going on down the beach and is witnessed by Garner Ellerbee, one-time beach cop and now an undercover detective for the Drug Interdiction Agency. A high-speed chase begins with Garner on horseback, and the dealers on ATVs. The chase goes past April and Mitch who then join in the pursuit in the Baywatch truck. Together, Mitch and Garner manage to capture the two dealers.

Garner and Mitch get a chance to renew their old acquaintance and Garner tells Mitch there’s a big drug smuggling ring operating off the coastline. Further proof of the drug activity surfaces when a dead dolphin Mitch and April found is tested by the Marine Lab and they report that it died from a phosphorescent chemical used to mark drug drop sites in the ocean. Garner enlists Mitch’s help in tracking down and busting the drug dealers.

Meanwhile, Lani is struggling to come to terms with her deafness. At the Doctor’s office, a physician confirms for Cody that Lani has severely ruptured eardrums. A hearing test shows that the deafness is total – and the doctor is unable to determine if her hearing will ever be restored, they just have to wait and see. After the doctor’s visit, Lani is almost hit by a truck that that is backing up out of the parking lot because she doesn’t hear the engine. Lani is stunned into a more complete realization of how much her life will be changed forever by her condition. Lani wanders around the beach trying come to terms with this enormous change in her life and Cody is at a complete loss for ways to comfort her.

Meanwhile, Neely is on duty and is approached by a handsome young man named Donovan. He invites her to a party he’s throwing on his boat. She invites along Mitch and Garner and when they board Donovan’s gorgeous yacht, Garner recognizes Donovan and realizes that this boat is the base for the drug operation. Garner later tells Mitch that Donovan is the head drug dealer.

Donovan seems to have taken a liking to Neely, to the chagrin of Mitch and Garner. Mitch and Garner inform Neely that Donovan is smuggling drugs from Mexico. That night, the two men investigate the water around the yacht and find the phosphorescent chemical that killed the dolphin. Unfortunately, they are discovered by Donovan’s major domo, Lukas, and try to get away, but Lukas has recognized them.

Garner proposes that Neely infiltrate the boat and plant a bug. Neely gets on board and hides the bug, but when Lukas tells Donovan that he saw Mitch and Garner the other night snooping around, Donovan takes Neely prisoner. A new shipment of drugs is coming in and an airplane drops it into the water. Just as Donovan is about to get the shipment on board, the yacht is flooded with lights and they are surrounded by Garner and DIA agents. Donovan and his crew are arrested and taken into custody. Meanwhile, Lani is sadly walking on the beach when she hears the cries of a lost little girl. Astonished, and slowly realizing that her hearing has been restored, she rescues the girl and returns her to her grateful mother. There is much relief and happiness back at Baywatch with the good news that Lani is going to be okay.
