SYNOPSIS: Jason and Leigh are manning the beach. They notice a beautiful woman, SASHA GRAVES, and a middle-aged man, her HUSBAND. The husband goes into the water. While Leigh is trying to help a lost child and Jason goes to look for beach scavenger CRAZY BOB, the husband is suddenly pulled below the surface.
At the same time, Sean is stuck in traffic in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village. He sees something that makes him catch his breath: a woman that resembles his ex-wife, MAGGIE. Just as they see each other, his Nextel starts chirping. Crazy Bob has found the body of the husband and dragged it to shore. Sean immediately rushes to the scene. Leigh tries her best to perform artificial respiration, but it’s too late. The man is dead. Strangely, his windpipe has been crushed. Leigh runs off to find Sasha, and catches her in the midst of a torrid embrace with SERGIO, a “friend of the family.” Leigh is immedi-ately suspicious of what she has just seen, but Sean reminds her that they are lifeguards, not policemen, and to leave the detective work to the pros. Arriving at the scene of the crime is Maggie. She tries to talk to Sean, but because of the investigation, he can’t talk to her at that moment. Instead, they agree to meet at a bar later. Once again, Sean’s work has taken precedence over his private life.
Leigh, however, cannot let go of her suspicion. She calls the police to see if they are do-ing any investigating. They have ruled the death accidental and it is closed. Next, she tries to get the coroner’s office to do an autopsy, using Sean’s name for more authority. Sean is very upset that she has done this and warns her to never do it again. Finally, Leigh confronts Sasha face to face. Sasha knows that Leigh is not someone to be messed with. Later, Jason comes up to Sasha and offers his sympathy for her loss. She thanks him and, before long, the two of them are having drinks together. She tells him the story of how she has made a fortune on her IPO and how miserable her marriage had been. Before he knows what’s happening, Jason finds himself kissing her-but she stops short of having sex with her. Leigh is shocked by Jason’s behavior, but it only convinces her more that her suspicions are correct.
At the restaurant, Sean and Maggie catch up, almost as if they have never been apart. Maggie has something she needs to tell him, but, before Maggie can give him the news, Sean gets a call from councilman McKenna’s office: he is to meet with DR. CHARLES BRYANT, a physician who wishes to open up a pediatric trauma center. Sean is forced to leave the meeting. He and Charles get along well. Later that evening, when he goes to meet with Maggie, he is stunned to see her sitting with Charles. It turns out that they are married! The three get into a fight, with Charles claiming he didn’t know Sean was on the island and Sean wondering why Maggie never told him she had remarried. Everyone storms off, angry.
Leigh next tries to find Crazy Bob, who might have been a witness to the murder. But, he is on vacation. Apparently, he “won the lottery” and has gone to the mainland. Leigh knows that Hawaii has no lottery. Leigh confronts Sasha again, warning her that she will eventually find the proof she needs. The next morning, Leigh sees a diver in trouble. She goes for the rescue. The diver is actually Sergio, who tries to strangle her. Fortu-nately, Jason has heard her cries and comes to the rescue. Sergio is booked for murder because of his past, but Sasha gets off. She tells a shocked Jason that he’s got a lot to learn about life. Two policemen then step out and arrest Sasha: Jason has been wired with a tape recorder and she has just made a “confession.” She is dragged off to jail, screaming epithets at him.
Maggie shows up at the beach to talk to Sean. The two of them realize there is still love between the two of them, but they cannot escape from their pasts. They share a final kiss. Later, Sean and Leigh watch as Maggie and Charles head towards the elevator, arm in arm. Leigh’s heart goes out to Sean.
