A father on the run is willing to risk his daughter dying in order to keep his ex-wife from catching them, and Sean must convince him to do the right thing.
The training period is coming to an end, and all of the trainees are anxious to see who will get the valued A-1 classification. During this final “heat,” everyone pushes themselves to the limit, including Zack and Carrie. Meanwhile, BARNEY POE and his daughter LIV are on the beach. A thief sees her taking out a wad of bills and tries to steal them. Zack immediatelyjumps into action and chases the thief through the crowds in the water via jet ski. He collars the thief, but knows he is in trouble with Sean for acting so rashly. He wonders if it will impact his ability to get his qualifying certification. Zack and Liv are attracted to one another. As they look around the training center, Barney ex-plains to Sean that he’s been a widower for eight years. Sean, thinking of Ben, under-stands Barney’s predicament and is sympathetic.
True to his worst fears, Zack does not get his certification. Zack, of course, is completely devastated-particularly when Carrie consoles him on washing out in front of Liv. He goes on a drinking binge. The next day, Jason has to pick him up from the scarab, where he lies drunk and passed out. After he comes to, Zack, still wildly upset, takes a swing at Jason and winds up in the water.
Sean gives Barney and Liv a tour of the training center, offering Liv a chance to audit the classes. Barney, though, acts very strange when Sean asks for his and Liv’ social security numbers. There’s a reason for this: eight years ago, Barney abducted Liv after her mother nearly killed her in a drunk driving accident. He has been on the run ever since. A detective has tracked them down to Hawaii, and he now needs to get out of town as soon as possible. This means somehow getting to Maui and taking a plane to Australia from there. Desperate, he enlists Zack’s help. Zack is torn, but ultimately gets them the boat. He bids good bye to Liv, who promises to get in touch with him as soon as she is settled.
On their way to Maui, Barney and Liv get into an accident and scuttle the boat. Liv’ arm is broken. Barney leaves her on a reef while he tries to get help from some fishermen. Instead, the Coast Guard picks him up. He lies and says that Liv was not with him when the boat had an accident. Back at headquarters, Val Lawton, his ex wife, confronts him. She is very changed from the drunk she used to be, and wants her daughter back. Barney, completely unforgiving, insists she is not with him. Zack, knowing the truth, speaks up. Sean, understanding Barney, gives him a heart to heart talk. Barney finally breaks down and confesses the truth, then is taken down town. Sean and Jason rush to save Liv. This time, Zack obeys orders and stays back. A Coastie pilot spots her stuck in the “washing machine,” a whirlpool. She is only saved from being sucked in by a thin rope that is now coming apart. With no time to spare, Sean and Jason perform a daring Jet Ski rescue by riding a wave in.
Back at the training center, Liv is introduced to Val. She doesn’t want to get close to her mother, years of feeling abandoned and lied to welling up. Sean gets some bad news: Barney, released on bail, has committed suicide by jumping off a cliff near Diamond Head. They retrieve the body, and Sean must give Liv the bad news. Liv and Val are reunited.
Later, Zack approaches Sean and Jason. He is putting together everything he has in order to pay for an additional session with the team-he will do anything to stay. Sean and Ja-son decide to let him do it. The only problem is that his new trainer will be none other than Carrie.
