Red Knights

Written by Elroy Schwartz

An ad hoc reunion of elite 1950s lifeguards, the “Red Knights,” triggers a bar room brawl and a Ben’s resignation. Meanwhile, Mitch helps deliver a baby when the mother goes into premature labor while swimming at the beach.

Matt and Summer are surprised when two older gentlemen on wave runners assist on a critical offshore rescue. Bud Gates and Cliff Odom are former lifeguards in town for a nostalgic lifeguard reunion, who along with Ben Edwards, comprised the “Red Knights,” the elite lifeguarding corps of the 1950’s. They have returned to relive their glory days, and are surprised to find Ben using a cane and confined to administrative duties due to his diminishing physical capabilities. Ben, already feeling his age because his pregnant niece, Annie, is visiting from out of town, is not entirely happy to see Bud and Cliff, two incredibly fit senior citizens that remind him of his weakened condition.

Meanwhile, Jackie Quinn tells Summer that shehas finally landed a gig. She’ll be singing at Bahama Mama’s, a legendary surf bar and former haunt of the Red Knights. Summer is excited for her mother, but when she learns Bud and Cliff are planning a Red Knights reunion at Bahama Mama’s when Jackie is scheduled to sing, she is reluctant to tell her mother. Unable to cancel her engagement, but nervous about singing in front of her friends, Jackie goes on with the show. The Baywatch entertainment event of the season is stopped when a bar room brawl erupts between the Red Knights and a ragtag collection of old-time surfers, led by infamous Corky Calhoun, who has held a grudge against Ben for stealing his girlfriend over 20 years ago. With chairs flying and bottles crashing against walls, the Red Knights emerge victorious.

Mitch, while on a routine patrol, faces a unique lifeguard situation when Annie prematurely goes into labor while swimming. Mitch succeeds in bringing her to shore, and delivers the baby. After the reunion, the pleasant memories of his youth seem painfully ironic to Ben and he decides to resign from Baywatch. He leaves behind a terse note of resignation, and heads to the pier to be alone. Suddenly, he sees a young boy who has fallen overboard from a fishing boat. The panic-stricken father is about to jump in after the boy, but instead, Ben himself jumps 50 feet into the water below. Ben saves the boy, revealing that though retired, he wil never quit being a lifeguard.
