The Edge

Cody is hard at work training for the Olympics, but his times are still not coming up to world class and he’s clearly frustrated with himself. After his swim, Cody meets Liz Brooks, a tall, athletic woman who remembers him from his tryouts for Olympic games. She tells him she’s a rep for a new line of nutritional supplements called “The Edge 4000,” and she would love for him to be a spokesperson. Cody is intrigued.

Alex and Newman arrive at work while Mitch is working out. Newman offers Alex some coffee and Mitch wonders if Newmie is hitting on Alex. The whirring of a blender disturbs his thoughts. Liz is mixing up an Edge drink for Cody. Liz explains how “The Edge” works, but Alex and Mitch are skeptical. Later on, Cody’s desire to become an Olympian and the spokesperson for ?The Edge? becomes even more of a driving force in his life, and it begins to interfere with his lifeguard hours. Mitch asks him to prioritize his life. Later that day, Alex patrols the beach. She comes across a Korean family and asks if their kids can swim. The Korean mom responds in Korean and Alex realizes there is a communications barrier. Alex does her best to tell the mom to watch her kids and the mom nods that she understands. As Alex tends to another child, a large wave strikes one of the children, pulling her under. Alex calls for help and then rushes to find the girl.

Mitch and Newmie discuss the Alex situation. Mitch assures Newmie that he is not interested in Alex and encourages Newmie to go for it. Their talk is interrupted by Alex’s call for help. As Mitch pulls up, Alex brings the limp body of the girl to shore. The Korean family clamors around Alex, trying to get their child from her. Mitch runs over, holding the family back while Alex tries to resuscitate the girl. Once the girl starts breathing again, the family understands.

Mitch goes back home and later on Newmie comes by to visit. Newmie asks Mitch to assign Alex to Malibu the next day. Before Mitch can answer, Alex shows up. Alex confirms with Mitch that they are having dinner together that night and then leaves. Newmie is upset, but Mitch assures him that he has no feelings for Alex and the dinner is just so Alex can butter him up for a promotion. At dinner Mitch toasts Alex as a woman who knows how to get what she wants. Alex wonders what he means by that statement since, in her eyes, they shared a special bonding moment when they saved the Korean girl. Mitch explains that she didn’t have to so through so much trouble for a promotion, she had already earned it. Enraged that Mitch would think her so shallow, and for his having completely misunderstood her motives for the dinner, Alex ends the night and Mitch decides to take her home. Once in traffic, the road shuts down, stranding them for the night. They decide to stay in one of the lifeguard towers. With just one blanket, they must huddle together to keep warm during a long, tense, unhappy night. Dawn arrives and Newmie runs to Alex’s tower with a bouquet of flowers to surprise her. When he opens the tower and sees Mitch and Alex on the floor together. Newmie is deeply hurt and runs off.

Cody splits his time between lifeguarding and training, but starts paying a price. He is freezing all the time now due to his lowered body fat. When a couple of girls get caught in a riptide, Cody rushes to their aid. Once in the water, Cody’s strength fades fast from the cold and he can barely keep himself afloat, let a lone save the girls. He passes out and Mitch and Newmie must rescue them all once they arrive. Back at the station, Mitch lectures Cody about either staying on as a lifeguard or training for the Olympics. Cody cannot do both and decides to go for the Olympics. Everyone wishes him well and Cody promises he’ll be back. Meanwhile, Mitch tells Newmie that he may be interested in Alex after all. Newmie says he cannot talk about that now because he is teaching Alex to surf. Newmie and Alex walk off together.
