The Swimmer

Mitch shows up at Jessie’s tower where she is in the process of learning stunt work from former medical supply salesman Ed Symes. She throws a punch that actually knocks Ed out. Mitch moves on to JD’s tower. JD tells him in confidence that Cody was really the hero behind the rescue of the little girl. JD minimizes his importance in the rescue, saying he was just doing his job. Mitch heads for Cody’s tower. Cody, of course, confesses to Mitch that JD was the real hero behind the rescue. He, Cody, was just doing his job. Baffled by all the different stories and strange actions, Mitch once again returns to the ocean and his swim. Ed tries to teach Jessie how to do a shoot-and-fall, but he misses the mattress. Jessie executes the stunt flawlessly, then fires Ed – for his own safety.

Cody and JD debate whether to apply for the Medal of Valor. Then, they realize that Mitch and Newmie are the real heroes and, intimidated by their records, decide not to do it. Meanwhile, Mitch has performed another rescue: this time on a stray dog he had seen frantically paddling in the ocean. No one knows where the dog came from or why it is in the water. Mitch leaves the dog with Jessie.

Unbeknownst to Cody and JD, Newmie is having a bit of a crisis of his own. He is trying to attract Carrie, a beautiful woman who spends time by his tower, by wearing a toupee. Mitch tries to dissuade him, telling him the toupee really looks like a dead squirrel on his head, but to no avail. After being ignored several times, Newmie has decided to give it all up and maybe go back to school so he can “be somebody.” Mitch reminds him of all the lives he’s saved. Newmie, getting the idea, throws away the toupee. He doesn’t need it.

Both Cody and JD fantasize about what it would be like to be a Medal of Valor recipient. They tell Mitch they are going for it, but he convinces them not to because it might embarrass the policemen. Reluctantly, they agree. Later, they watch in astonishment as the two policemen JD and Cody saved are awarded medals for saving the girl…and them on television. The two men glower at Mitch. Realizing he needs to make a hasty retreat, he goes outside, where he sees Ed trying to teach Jessie how to throw a lasso. Unfortunately, the lasso catches on the rear view mirror of a passing Baywatch truck, and Ed is yanked off his feet!

Meanwhile, Ed, who never gives up, is trying to show Jessie how to crash through candy glass, or have a candy glass bottle broken over your head. Unfortunately, the candy glass bottle and glass pane don’t break, and Ed winds up wounded again. And again, when Jessie dives through the glass, the stunt is perfect. Ed tells her she has potential.

Mitch watches as Newmie finally makes contact with Carrie. Without the toupee, being himself, he scores and the two walk off together. In the distance, Mitch sees Craig and April sharing a kiss. He looks at the stray dog he rescued earlier and tells it, wistfully, that he hopes it doesn’t snore.
