Stephanie, Caroline and CJ take a group of junior lifeguard girls to Catalina Island in order to teach the concept of teamwork, but their own commitment is tested when Neely shows up. Meanwhile, Mitch faces the challenge of suddenly becoming an adoptive father.
In order to better teach lifeguarding skills, Stephanie, Caroline and CJ separate the Junior Lifeguard girls from the boys. However, the girls are still distracted by the boys training further down the beach and as a result, they aren’t working together as a team. Stephanie, Caroline and CJ decide that serious measures are in order–a weekend trip to Catalina Island, where they can teach the girls teamwork, free from distractions.
While the girls prepare for the trip, Mitch receives a letter from L.A. Superior Court requesting him to appear for the reading of a will. According to the letter, Mitch has been named beneficiary by a woman Mitch does not know. At the hearing, Mitch discovers that the decedent is actually Kyla Jennings. Kyla and her daughter Joey were con artists Mitch met the previous Christmas, and Mitch’s influence turned them away from a life of petty theft. When Kyla dies suddenly in a car wreck, Joey is willed to Mitch. He now must face the daunting prospect of raising an adopted daughter.
Stephanie, Caroline and CJ arrive at Catalina with the girls, but despite not being invited, Neely shows up anyway. Caroline and CJ are less than thrilled with Neely’s presence, and Stephanie must step in to keep them from arguing in front of the girls and setting a bad example. Before she can finish, however, two of the girls end up in serious danger. They went exploring in a cave against Stephanie’s express instructions, and the tide has rushed in, trapping them inside. Now, all the lifeguards must put aside their differences and work together as a team, or the girls will face certain drowning.
