We are in the middle of a turbulent ocean. Allie and BRIAN are in an IRB, attempting to rescue a couple who are caught against cliffs and rocks. Allie suggests they use the Belt and Reel technique to save them. Sean watches with binoculars from his command post on a hill. The waves are so rough that there is no way to get in, and time is running out. Seeing an opportunity, Jason roars in and rescues the man, despite Sean’s warnings via Nextel phone to stay back. Allie and Brian are then able to get in and rescue the woman. At the conclusion, Jason looks up at Sean and sees that Sean is not pleased by the way the rescue went down. Jason doesn’t understand why.
Mitch arrives at the newly-completed training center, where he and the team meet with GOVERNOR CAYATANO. The governor is very impressed with the set up. It is beyond anything he had imagined. There is a traditional blessing to commemorate the opening of the new facility.
Later at the new headquarters, Allie is trying on a new outfit to impress NICHOLAS KARRAS, a rescue swimmer she is sweet on. Dawn and Kekoa help her. Suddenly, Jessie bursts into the room: Sean is going to send Jason back.. Everyone is distraught, but Sean feels that Jason is a danger to the team as a whole because he didn’t follow orders. He cannot be moved by any of their protestations. He reminds them that they were supposed to start photographing the ocean floor along the Banzai Pipeline. Dawn decides to go off with Karras and Allie. This is not good news for Allie. Jessie and Kekoa feel that Dawn has ulterior motives. Sean meets Jason on the beach. He feels that Jason’s problem is that he is too much of an individual and doesn’t really understand what lifeguarding is all about. Jason insists he can’t go back: for the first time, he feels like he belongs. Sean decides to give Jason one more chance.
On a sail boat in the middle of the ocean, TED and his very pregnant wife ETTIENNE WARNER are experiencing some problems: a line gets twisted. While Ted tries to repair it, Etienne’s air mattress blows overboard. Then, she loses her balance and falls into the water. Reacting instinctively, Ted dives in after her. They watch as their sail boat floats away. They are confident that help will come sooner or later. Fortunately, because of her condition, Etienne is able to float well.
Back at Sandy Beach, Sean tries to explain to Jason what his problem as a lifeguard is: being a lifeguard is more than performing a great rescue, it’s about risk management-seeing a potential problem and solving it on land. Sean decides to give Jason another chance. They spot a group of mainlanders watching the local surfers. Jason correctly notes that the man is probably going to try to join the fun-without the right kind of ex-perience. He goes and talks to the family, suggesting they go to Hanauma Bay instead. They agree that it would be a better idea and leave and drive off in their Dollar Rent a Car. Sean sees that Jason gets it, and tells him to report to him at the end of the day.
Today, the Banzai Pipeline is flat-without the huge waves that make it famous. Jason, Kekoa and JD use their Sony video cameras to shoot the ocean floor and note all the ar-eas that could cause problems. While they are shooting underwater, Kekoa decides to have some fun and pretends like she is a fashion model. Jessie sees her and starts doing the same thing. JD records this as well.
In the helicopter, Dawn continues to talk about how impressed she is with the Coast Guard and the work that Karras does. Allie is growing impatient at Dawn’s obvious flir-tatiousness. Karras enjoys the fact that the two women are obviously fighting over him. Karras points out how the Banzai Pipeline formed, and talks a little of his background. Suddenly, Allie notices Etienne’s air raft floating. They feel there is something suspi-cious about this, and decide to investigate further. Meanwhile, in the water, Etienne suddenly goes into labor.
Allie, Dawn and Karras spot the sailboat. Karras uses a rope to climb down from the heli-copter, catch the line trailing from the back of the sailboat, and investigate. He calls them on the Nextel cell phone and tells them that the boat is empty. Allie calls to see who the boat is registered to, and learns about the Warners. They realize they must have fallen overboard. The Coast Guard and other Baywatch members are alerted. Karras then climbs back onto the helicopter in a daring stunt. Etienne’s water breaks. Ted is in a panic.
Back at the beach, Jason sees some military types who are obviously going to be hot dogs. He tries to warn them about the dangers, but, unlike the family, they are not will-ing to listen to a “cabana boy.” Jason knows he must keep an eye on them. Sure enough, one of the military men gets in trouble with a huge wave. He wipes out. Jason immediately springs into action and uses the cervical hold to bring him to shore. The vic-tim starts screaming about not being able to feel his legs. His neck is broken.
JD, Jessie and Kekoa tell Allie they are about twenty minutes away. Karras, using bin-oculars, spots Ted and Etienne. Allie radios in the location. Karras jumps from the heli-copter into the water to tell the couple not to worry. Ted and Etienne tell him she is in labor. Thinking quickly, Allie takes Dawn down with an assortment of medical supplies, including Hawaiian bottled water, which is to be used after the baby is born. Karras and Dawn dive under water and perform a technique that is modeled somewhat on the La-maze method. Etienne gives birth. The new born baby is placed in another life vest. The scarab carrying JD, Jessie and Kekoa arrive at the same time as other Coast Guard back ups. Sean and Jason talk. Jason is upset he wasn’t able to save the military man. Sean re-minds him that the job includes situations where someone can die. Jason wonders if the victim might be better off dead than be a twentysomething quadriplegic. He and Sean go for a swim. Obviously, he will remain with the team-for a while.
