Rookie of The Year

Written by Gregory J. Bonann & Deborah Bonann Schwartz

Summer and Matt face grueling personal and physical challenges in Rookie School, the “boot camp” of lifeguarding, while CJ and Stephanie are forced to share an apartment.

After Mitch Buchannon and Stephanie Holden go over the 300-page lifeguarding manual with the young prospects, Matt and Summer prepare themselves for the trial run of the “Gauntlet,” a grueling contest that is the ultimate arbiter of who passes rookie school and who does not. Only 20 competitors will be selected from the 50 entrants, and while Matt is convinced he’ll place first, Summer is aiming to place in the top 20.

An excellent swimmer, Summer sails along the initial Gauntlet race until faced with the 40-foot pier jump to the ocean below. Paralyzed with fear, she can only turn and walk away. Matt has no problem with the physical requirements of the Gauntlet, but his inability to deal with his father’s relentless criticism gets in the way of his rookie school performance. His wisecracks and tardiness are not taken lightly by Stephanie Holden, who predicts he’ll flunk out and rides him until he quits. However, Mitch sympathizes with Matt’s troubled father-son relationship and convinces him to rejoin rookie school.
Meanwhile, Stephanie and CJ show up at the same apartment to move in, and realize they have both been duped by a conniving ex-boyfriend of Stephanie’s. With nowhere else to go, they make a stab at living together and the Baywatch “odd couple” is born. CJ eats health food, chants while meditating, and leaves her clothes to dry all over the apartment. Stephanie is neat, can’t stand New Age thinking, and is intolerant of the messy apartment. It’s a match made in hell, and it only gets funnier when Stephanie walks in on CJ and her date.
