Written by Gary Capo & Julian Whatley and Michael Berk

Kaye Morgan introduces a deaf girl to sign language, while Mitch confronts a terrifying childhood memory.
A family beach outing goes awry when ay oung deaf girl, Lili, becomes separated from her family. Her mother, Sharon, frantically combs the beach,
but to no avail. Kaye Morgan, who knows sign language, offers to help and together Sharon and Kaye look for the terrified Lili. Hobie, meanwhile, is preoccupied with troubles of his own. After a surfing wipeout, he’s afraid to get back on his board. After his friends tease him, he pledges to overcome his fears by surfing the waves of a coming storm dubbed “Big Monday I” after the legendary “Big Monday” gale which brought 30-foot breakers to Los Angeles beaches in 1961.

When Mitch hears reports of the coming storm and its comparison to Big Monday, he is momentarily frozen by a terrifying memory. Only screams coming from the water pull Mitch back to reality. Lili has been pulled out by the undercurrent and can’t get back to shore. Mitch quickly swims toward her, but a mysterious Hawaiian reaches her first, bringing her to safety. The man disappears into the waves, leaving only an ivory pendant clutched in the hands of the rescued Lili.

Mitch, curious about the pendant and his memory of Big Monday, sets out to find the Hawaiian and discovers that he is Sonny Paalua, son of the recently drowned surfing great Duke Paalua. Sonny tells him that fate has brought them together and urges him to keep the pendant. Later, Mitch has a nightmare which reveals why the memory of Big Monday fills him with terror.

Kaye convinces Lili’s parents to schedule a visit to a sign-language school for the deaf nearby. Everything runs smoothly until Lili, unable to communicate with the other children, gets into a tussle over a toy. Sharon rushes away with Lili, certain that her child cannot make it in the hearing or deaf environments. Kaye pleads with Sharon to let Lili accompany her on a trip to an amusement
park. It’s a magical journey for Lili as Kaye introduces her to the world of communication through sign. When Lili returns home, she signs “I love you, Mommy” and begins to discover language.
