The Chamber

Written by Alan Swyer &Gregg Segal
Mitch rescues a diver trapped 90 feet below the ocean surface, but almost dies himself while suffering the effects of decompression.

Craig writes Mitch about a perfect job. It will be substantial raise, but Mitch will have to quit lifeguarding and travel, and that means sending Hobie to live with his mother, Gail. Mitch goes out on his surfski to think it over and comes across Cooper, a frantic 12-year old boy in a motorboat. His father Hal is trapped beneath a sunken wreck they were investigating on the ocean floor. He has only 15 minutes of air left in his tank. Mitch radios Baywatch headquarters and tells them that if they’re not there within ten minutes, he’s going down sans scuba gear to save Hal.

After torturous minutes of waiting, Mitch free dives and attempts to free Hal from the wreckage. It is no easy task, and while trying to lift the shattered hull, both Mitch and Hal are running out of air. In a final Herculean effort, Mitch clears Hal from the wreck and brings him topside to the waiting Coast Guard helicopter. On board the ‘copter, Eddie and Newman decide to go to Catalina Island, which has two decompression chambers. Upon their arrival, they find that only one is operable. Mitch insists that Hal be placed in the working chamber despite his own grave condition. In order to save Mitch’s life, they will have to fly him to Baywatch headquarters where there is a working decompression chamber. The delay could be fatal.

Upon arrival, Mitch is delirious and having flashbacks. The encouraging words of the Baywatch crew are seemingly lost on the unconscious figure wracked in pain. As his life slips away, Mitch has an out-of-body experience. Now, only the brave words of Hobie, desperately pleading for Mitch to hang on, can bring Mitch back to this world.
